“Again!” Ori barked, and I tapped the same spot. “Harder, hit it harder!”

I growled and turned my anger on the spear beneath my hammer, beating it into the shape that the Aether impressed upon my mind and vision.

“Smithing weapons is as much a work of passion as anything in this world, Monami—you have to feel the heat of the forge working through you.” His waxing poetic about the art had been a new one for me, and as much as it could have been a helpful lecture outside in the cool air, it was destroying what precious little focus I had. “The hammer is your will incarnate, and you must use it to exact your desire on the canvas before you, with the Aether as your muse. So help me, if you strike the damned anvil again, I will see you polish every blade we have!”

Clang! “God fucking shit!” My snarled cuss rang out around the square, other people stopped to stare at us.

“Get out.” Ori sighed tiredly.

I set the hammer down and looked at him, his disappointment apparent in his downcast gaze. “I can do it, I just need more practice. Please, let me keep trying.”

“No.” He shook his head. “I can only teach you the mundane way to craft, and that is not what you need. That parcel I gave you? Was a letter of introduction to the smith I had told you to find. He could teach you both.”

“Am I really that bad a smith that you don’t want to work with me anymore?” Biting anxiety nipped at my chest. If I couldn’t work here, we would need to pay full price for Mom’s gear. We could do it, but what if we needed that money for other things?

“Save the waterworks, girl.” Ori spat. “You know bloody well that I’d have you in this smithy over almost anyone. Your talent and dedication are admirable—my concern is ruining you and your potential. I cannot bring myself to be so selfish as that.”

So, he was trying to save me from making bad habits stick or something? “Okay. If that’s how you feel, I’ll practice my trade with this other smith and then come back to help you guys, too. But what of my mother?”

“Twenty-five percent below is still your rate. Employee discount and all.” Ori glanced my way and gave me a sly wink as the other smiths shook their heads. “Get going, girl. I want you to be the best. Understand?”

“Yes sir!” I barked, and he smiled. Each of the smiths came out to the cool air to give me supportive hugs, Alvor holding on a little longer than the others and whispering his gratitude for everything. After I patted his back awkwardly, he let go.

I turned dejectedly and decided that since nothing else was going on, I’d log out and get some extra sleep. An extra hour wouldn’t hurt anything.
